Community Wellness Educator

Michigan Housing 2020-2021

Overview

In support of the University of Michigan in delivering on its mission while protecting the health and safety of residents in Michigan Housing, the Community Wellness Educator position will assist with minimizing the potential spread of disease within our community through proactive educational programming, outreach, and development of a community that is inclusive and supportive for residents across all social identities. This position will additionally serve as a resource for other student staff members who may need assistance in navigating conversations or developing programs with their residents around the public health and safety guidelines. 

Position Responsibilities

Residential Community Responsibilities - 70%

  • Advocate for health and well-being of residents through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens

  • Create public health informed programs to educate the community on best practices for staying safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic and other health-related issues, including the intersection of these topics with DEI

  • Engage residents specifically around best practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing educational opportunities for residents to connect with each other around community responsibility during this time

  • Model personal behavior that is consistent with the Michigan Housing mission, Community Living Standards, Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Michigan Housing staff and campus partners including but not limited to student staff from other Student Life units, MESA, Spectrum Center, Trotter, Academic departments, and Michigan Learning Communities

Administrative Tasks - 30%

  • Actively monitors shared spaces to ensure face coverings are being worn, social distancing is being practiced, and public health precautions being followed

  • Supply residents with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sanitization products or assist residents with accessing these products as needed

  • Provide additional support to the community(ies) assigned to remind residents about guidelines that help keep the community safe and healthy

  • Attend regular bi-weekly meetings with Diversity and Inclusion staff 

Perform other duties as assigned by Michigan Housing professional staff. 

Position Requirements

  • Enrolled as a student for the 2020-2021 academic year and living in Michigan Housing (both standard and extended contract holders are eligible)

  • Must be in good academic standing within their school/college

  • Experience in a customer service setting

  • Must have a flexible work schedule; evenings and weekends required

  • Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws

  • Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the Michigan Housing Community Living at Michigan, and any other applicable University policies and procedures

  • May not simultaneously hold another student staff position in Michigan Housing.

Time Commitment and Compensation

  • Approximately 10-hour a week commitment

  • Candidates must be available to work onsite from August 31, 2020 - November 20, 2020 and virtually from November 21, 2020 - December 4, 2020 in the fall semester and onsite January 18, 2021 - April 30, 2020 in the winter semester

  • Compensation is $11.00 an hour
