Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant
Job Description Academic Year 2019-2020


As an expression of Housing’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion, the Multicultural Lounges on campus provide a space where community members can engage with diverse ideas, perspectives, and stories of individuals and communities. The purpose of the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant (MLCA) is to assist in creating a space where community members can engage with diverse ideas, perspectives, and stories of individuals and communities through participation in a variety of programs and activities that occur in the multicultural lounges.


Multicultural and minority culture lounges were originally created to provide students of color the opportunity to interact with one another in a relaxed and open environment; they became havens for support, solidarity, and sharing. Today, the multicultural and minority culture lounges still serve this purpose and have also expanded to meet the ever-changing needs of residents of all social identities. Residents are welcome to use the lounges for studying, collaborating with peers, learning and educating, reflecting, and hosting inclusive planned events for the residential communities.

Position Description:

Community Building Responsibilities 60%
The Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant will be responsible for creating a positive and welcoming space for individuals entering the Multicultural Lounge. Community building responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-Publicly represent Diversity and Inclusion and answer questions about the lounge.
-Develop and implement programs that are both welcoming and educational.
-Plan and complete passive and active programming while working in the lounge
-Utilize the DEI Programming Model when planning events
-Assist in implementing You Belong Here Programming as needed
-Assist with various Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, and Diversity Peer Educator programs, projects, and events in the space.
-Model personal behavior that is consistent with the University Housing mission, Community Living Standards, Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
-Comply with University of Michigan and University Housing policies and procedures.
-Collaborate with campus partner events in the space including but not limited to MESA, Spectrum Center, Academic Units, Heritage Month Events, and the Lounge’s Legacy Group.

Administrative Tasks 40%
The Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant will assist with the daily operations of the lounge, including, but not limited to:
-Assist with managing communications related to solicitation request, distribution of postings, and lounge reservations.
-Assist with managing the lounge and sharing needs of the space with Diversity and Inclusion staff.
-Troubleshoot and resolve problems with systems, employees, and guests.
-Prepare reports noting any problems, damage or thefts to equipment and furniture within the lounge.
-Ensure proper use of the lounge when groups are using the space.
-Attend regular bi-weekly meetings with the Diversity and Inclusion staff.

Perform other duties related to the operation of the Multicultural Lounge as assigned by Diversity and Inclusion professional staff.

Position Requirements
-Enrolled as a student for the 2019-2020 academic year.
-Must be in good academic standing within their school/college.
-Strong preference will be given to students living on-campus during the 2019-2020 academic year.
-Experience in a customer service setting.
-Must have flexible work schedule and be available to work in the specifically assigned lounge; evenings and weekends required.
-Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws.
-Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the University Housing Community Living at Michigan, and -any other applicable University policies and procedures.
-May not simultaneously hold another student staff position in University Housing.

Time Commitment and Compensation:
-Approximately 8-12-hour a week commitment.
-Candidates must be available to start work between August 29, 2019 and September 4, 2019. Position ends around May 1, 2020 .
-Pay is $10.00 an hour.
