As an expression of Housing’s commitment to Diversity and Inclusion, the Multicultural Lounges on campus provide a space where community members can engage with diverse ideas, perspectives, and stories of individuals and communities. The purpose of the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant (MLCA) is to assist in creating a space where community members can engage with diverse ideas, perspectives, and stories of individuals and communities through participation in a variety of programs and activities that occur in the multicultural lounges.
The main responsibilities of the Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant role for the 2021-2022 academic year is to assist in creating a welcoming and safe environment for residents to utilize the Multicultural Lounges. MLCAs implement programs and work within the lounges, serving as a resource about the lounge and its use for residents.
Residents are welcome to use the lounges for studying, collaborating with peers, learning and educating, reflecting, and hosting inclusive planned events for the residential communities.
Community Building Responsibilities 60%
The Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant will be responsible for creating a positive and welcoming space for individuals entering the Multicultural Lounge. Community building responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Publicly represent Diversity and Inclusion and answer questions about the lounge.
Develop and implement passive and active programs that are both welcoming and educational utilizing the DEI Programming Model
Assist in implementing You Belong Here Programming as needed
Assist with various Housing, Diversity and Inclusion, and Diversity Peer Educator programs, projects, and events in the spaces.
Model personal behavior that is consistent with the Michigan Housing mission, Community Living Standards, Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and public health guidelines.
Administrative Tasks 40%
The Multicultural Lounge Community Assistant will assist with the daily operations of the lounge, including, but not limited to:
Assist with managing communications related to solicitation requests, distribution of postings, and lounge reservations.
Assist with management of the lounge, including compliance with public health guidelines, and sharing needs of the space with Diversity and Inclusion staff.
Troubleshoot and resolve problems with systems, employees, and guests.
Prepare reports noting any problems, damage or thefts to equipment and furniture within the lounge.
Ensure proper use of the lounge when groups or individuals are using the space.
Attend regular bi-weekly meetings with the Diversity and Inclusion staff.
Perform other duties related to the operation of the Multicultural Lounge as assigned by Diversity and Inclusion professional staff.
Enrolled as a student for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Must be in good academic standing within their school/college.
Strong preference will be given to students living on-campus during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Experience in a customer service setting.
Must have a flexible work schedule and be available to work in the specifically assigned lounge(s); evenings and weekends required.
Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws.
Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide, the University Housing Community Living at Michigan, and any other applicable University policies and procedures.
May not simultaneously hold another student position in Michigan Housing.
Time Commitment and Compensation:
Approximately 8-12-hour a week commitment.
Candidates should be available to start work between August 30th, 2021 and September 3rd, 2021. Position ends around April 19th, 2022.
Pay is $10.00 an hour.
COVID-19 vaccinations are now required for all University of Michigan students, faculty and staff across all three campuses, including Michigan Medicine, by the start of the fall term on Aug. 30, 2021.
