In support of the University of Michigan in delivering on its mission while protecting the health and safety of our community, the Michigan Ambassador position will assist with proactive outreach in the community to communicate and remind students about public health best practices. Individuals in this position will have a visible presence in the community that promotes health and safety and will work to address concerns via peer and community based interventions,  elevating concerns to appropriate other resources as needed.

Position Responsibilities

Off-campus Community Canvassing Responsibilities - 70%

  • Advocate for health and well-being of residents through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens by encouraging best practices

  • Participate in proactive  public health neighborhood canvassing as part of an ambassador team  to educate the community on best practices for staying safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic 

  • Engage community members about best practices especially around community responsibility (size of gatherings, social distancing, face coverings, etc)

  • Interact informally with other students providing suggestions about keeping the community safe.

  • Remind community members about guidelines that help keep the community safe by sending Culture of Care reminders. 

  • Model personal behavior that is consistent with the Student Life mission, and the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with student Ambassadors from other university units

  • Practice active bystander intervention and conflict resolution skills when addressing public health concerns 

Administrative Tasks - 30%

  • Assist community members with information about how to access COVID related support

  • Elevate and document canvassing related  concerns to designated staff member in the COVID Coordination Center to ensure public health guidance is being followed

  • Provide assessment data at completion of work shifts documenting the general status of observed community behaviors

  • Attend regular training and staff meetings. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by shift supervisor

Position Requirements

  • Enrolled as a student for the 2020-2021 academic year a

  • Must be in good academic standing within their school/college

  • Experience in a customer service setting

  • Must have a flexible work schedule; evenings and weekends required

  • Must comply with all local, state, and federal laws

  • Must uphold all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide,  Statement for Students Rights and Responsibilities and any other applicable University policies and procedures

Time Commitment and Compensation

  • Approximately 10-hour a week commitment

  • Candidates must be available to work in person from August 24, 2020 - November 20, in the fall semester and in person January 18, 2021 - April 30, 2020 in the winter semester

  • Compensation is $11.00 an hour
