Michigan Men Project Coordinator

Job Summary:

As a part of the Student Life collaboration between the University of Michigan’s Office of Student Conflict and Resolution (OSCR), Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Center (SAPAC), and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) the position of Michigan Men Project Coordinator will support the operations of the Michigan Men Program. This program focuses on intra-group dialogue, programming, and educational initiatives focused on fostering the development of healthy, individualized gender-identities for masculine-identified individuals. The goals of the Michigan Men Program are to assist students in developing authentic and individualized identities as men that promote the development of healthy, consensual, non-violent relationships and safe, values-driven fraternity and organizational cultures for all members of the campus community.

The objectives of the Michigan Men Program are to create opportunities for students to:

● Continue to develop their personal masculine identity by participating in group discussion and pre/post assessments
● Deepen their individual values and develop actionable strategies for their lives that lead to the promotion of healthy and consensual relationships
● Apply constructs of social justice to their identities as men to understand how men can effectively engage in harm prevention work
● Describe how constructs of masculinity affect their group (i.e. fraternity) experiences and develop implementable plans to create safe and wellness promoting organizations.

The Project Coordinator will schedule, structure, and facilitate both single session workshops and seven-week, multi-session educational opportunities that will seek to fulfill the objectives of the program. The Project Coordinator will be supervised by OSCR Sexual Misconduct Case Manager Jim McEvilly, LLMSW.

Responsibilities:

Michigan Men Program Curriculum Development & Facilitation Responsibilities: 40%

● Co-facilitate, with professional staff members or peer facilitators, 90 minute introductory workshops to members of the U-M fraternity community and other student groups as appropriate
● Co-facilitate, with professional staff members or peer facilitators, the seven-week seven-session Michigan Men educational curriculum to members of the U-M fraternity community and other student groups as appropriate
● Provide support in the continued development and refinement of the Michigan Men educational curriculum
● Develop Michigan Men toolkit for dissemination to other Universities and Colleges.

Key Administrative Responsibilities: 40%

● Train and oversee student peer facilitators in their role within the Michigan Men Program
● Recruit and retain student participants involvement within the program
● Distribute promotional and other project materials to fraternity chapters, student organizations, and other community partners to promote program engagement and success
● Promote the Michigan Men program on campus by attending relevant community events and meetings
● Provide consultation to interested fraternity chapters and student organizations about the Michigan Men Program
● Manage the organization and disbursement of incentive items that will be provided to Michigan Men participants who fully complete program requirements
● Other duties as assigned.

Program Evaluation Efforts: 20%

● Distribute, analyze, and assess participant evaluation measures
● Receive and maintain PEERRS certification through U-M in order to engage in appropriate and ethical evaluation efforts.

Qualifications & Position Criteria

Required Qualifications:

● Enrolled as a graduate student for the 2018-2019 academic year. Current graduate student in Public Health, Social Work, Higher Education, or other field related to prevention education, social justice, etc
● Strong interpersonal and emotional skills -- ability to positively liaise with students and staff in a high-volume, fast-paced program
● Highly organized -- able to promptly and courteously respond to e-mails; able to manage multiple program details
● Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience
● Highly comfortable with public speaking for various audiences
● Self-motivated, reliable, responsible individual able to take direction and work independently
● Must have flexible work schedule; some evening and weekends required.

Desired Qualifications:

● Prior experience working with or being a member of the Fraternity or Sorority Life Community
● Foundational understanding of gender-socialization and masculinity theory.
