The aim of the Trotter Multicultural Center Intercultural Learning Program is to develop inclusive leaders with growth mindsets who can effectively navigate across difference.
In 2016, the Division of Student Life launched a three year pilot of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) in efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive campus. This work has produced statistically significant gains in all six learning outcomes measured by Student Life. Our students have also reported at an 80% rate that they consider things they wouldn’t usually think about and that they have set DEI related goals as a direct result of their IDI experience.
Through the Trotter Multicultural Center Intercultural Learning Program, continued use of the IDI as well as a broader range of intercultural learning tools, programs and strategies will further our ability address the needs of our campus community and provide opportunities for students to learn about and develop methods to navigate interactions across difference.
This program is in support of the U-M institutional DEI strategic effort and Student Life’s DEI Strategic Plan which prioritizes:
● Strengthening existing student advocacy, support and education, the first year experience and academic partnerships
● Building Trotter as a Center for broad student engagement and innovative intercultural learning and development
● Enhancing current staff skills and developing inclusive hiring practices and equitable onboarding and development experiences for all new team members
● Improving assessment capacity to ensure our work is more data-informed
The focus on this position is on the development and delivery of programs and initiatives that develop a more global and inclusive (ie. growth) mindsets that will aid students in more effectively navigating across difference.
Working as part of the Trotter Multicultural Center Intercultural Learning (IL) team, student staff position(s) will work in support of an expanding number Intercultural Learning initiatives that will be developed and implemented during the first year of the new Trotter Multicultural Center facility opening on State St. in April of 2019. This role will work directly with our largest IL program, the U-M Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Experience. This includes, but is not limited to, working with academic and co-curricular partners, developing programmatic and educational materials, and providing resources and support to a community of 100+ IDI Qualified Administrators across campus. As part of the IL team, this role will also be integral in the creation and implementation of additional Intercultural Learning programs. The ultimate aim of this growing area of the Trotter Multicultural Center is to encourage global and inclusive mindsets through innovative use of intercultural learning tools and programs.
